about

“Rebound” was written a few months ago. In fact, it was the last piece added to our repertoire but for a while, it lacked a title. I liked this one because of its melody, that seems to rebound against every note of an almost chromatic scale.

“Insomnia Waltz” is an attempt to describe the different phases of insomnia: first, some weariness, then a self-sung lullaby, then the obvious impossibility to sleep if you sing a lullaby (and start to solo over it!). Finally, the desperation of a demolished man. I should add that this is a little autobiographical too.

“Romantica” is about Italy. Many people from Argentina, my homeland (including a big part of my family), are of Italian descent. I always felt drawn to Italian culture. The movies, the language, the food. Italian music is characterized by a strong melodic sense which I always try to keep in mind when I write music.

“Two Jims and Bob” is my tribute to one of the greatest and most innovative groups in jazz history: Jimmy Giuffre’s trio with Jim Hall and Bob Brookmeyer. The interaction between clarinet, trombone and guitar, the use of rhythmic figures and a folksy, simple character are elements of their music that I tried to keep within this piece.

“Elipso” is sort of a calypso, not a regular calypso but rather an elliptical one. Hence the title.

“Reno” (it means “reindeer” in Spanish) was written one year ago to be played in Finland, a beautiful country in which these nice animals abound. Mood is bucolic. A little solemn too.

“In Motian” is dedicated to Paul Motian, another of my heroes. He played with some of the most influential groups in jazz history (George Russell Sextet, Bill Evans Trio, Paul Bley, Keith Jarrett American Quartet) and since the ‘70s he revealed himself as one of the most personal composers and bandleaders ever.

“Feigele” is a Yiddish word that means “little bird”. I learned it from my friend Hernán Mandelman, who heard it from his Polish Grandmother. This composition reflects my interest in Klezmer music. Again, the lineup of clarinet and trombone establishes the mood of the piece.

“Paco’s Bar” is dedicated to my friend Paco Galán, from A Coruña. He has a huge record collection and the listening room, the so called “Paco’s Bar”, is also a place for talking and laughing. A fun place to hang out.

“Gnu Stomp” is the only tune previously recorded (with the Gnu Trio, GNU-001). It’s based on a second line drumming pattern. We usually play this tune at the end of our concerts as a showcase for all the band members’ soloing skills. It’s also a vehicle for the collective exploration about different textures and sounds.
